Our Recommended Tools (and How to Think About Buying Them)

The world of training gear can be confusing. We’ve tested a ton of it over the years so you don’t have to, and a lot of what people think they “need” really comes down to a few simple principles.

Here’s a quick guide to how we recommend choosing equipment for your practice — followed by answers to the most common gear questions we get.

Do I need the “best” gear to train well?

No! Most gear is totally fine, what matters is whether you’ll actually use it.
If a tool makes your practice smoother, more comfortable, or more fun, that’s where it shows its value.
If it gathers dust in the corner, it doesn’t matter how “premium” it is.

What should I spend money on?

Comfort, safety, and durability.
Don’t over-upgrade. Simple, reliable equipment used consistently beats anything fancy that gathers dust.

Is commercial-grade equipment worth it for home training?

Usually not. Commercial gear is built for hundreds of uses a day.
Your home practice won’t come close to that level of wear and tear, so “sturdy and safe” is enough.

How do I know if something is good quality?

If it helps you practice more often and with less friction, it’s good quality for *you*.
The right tool reduces obstacles and supports you and your routine, that’s way more important than any marketing hype.

What gear should I start with?

Start with whatever makes your training easier or more enjoyable.
A mat, a set of rings, or a simple timer can go a long way.
Prioritize tools that help you show up.

Ever since releasing our Integral Strength program, which features a lot of pulling movements on a bar, we’ve gotten a number of questions about a pull-up bar. This is relatively inexpensive and gets the job done.

Stop Chasing the “Best” – Practice Builds You, Not Gear

After all these years, we’ve learned that gear won’t really make or break your practice, it’s your practice that makes your gear worth the expense. Every shiny new thing will promise to change the game, but only the things that help you keep showing up month after month and year after year will do that.

Choose tools that fit your life, not someone else’s marketing plan.
